He was a soldier in the War between the States with his brothers James M. Hyman and John Guilford Hyman. He entered service April 27, 1861 Co. G. 3rd Calvary (also known as Scotland Neck Mounted Riflemen 41st Regiment). He was transferred Nov. 1, 1863 to Co. E 17th Infantry. He was a member of Conoho Primitive Baptist Church
